Dear Valued Harkins Team and Guests,

On behalf of all of us at Harkins, I’d like to express our deepest gratitude for your continuing support.  Like you, we could have never imagined what our country and the world has experienced over the last several months.  We also could never have imagined that we would be experiencing such a sustained closure of our business.  Although this has been extraordinarily difficult for our company, above all else our thoughts are with families directly impacted by this deadly disease, as well as our team, our guests, frontline medical workers, and essential workers everywhere.  As a private family-owned business, we also know that many small businesses are suffering greatly right now, and unlike Harkins, may not be able to survive this pandemic.  We encourage everyone to support these small local businesses in any way you can.

Over the last few weeks, I have written many versions of this letter.  In each one, I was very much hoping to join the chorus of companies announcing a reopening date for their business.  However, before I could finish writing, circumstances in our communities, and subsequently the movie industry, would change and force further delay in our reopening timeline.  Unfortunately, this is also the case today.  As we have communicated previously, our goal has always been to reopen a week or so prior to the release of new major Hollywood films.  Due to the ongoing challenges with the COVID-19 crisis, the major movie releases planned for July had moved to August, and now are moving again into tentative dates in September.  Our hope is that together our country will take the necessary actions needed to achieve sustained improvements in the rate of infection that will give everyone confidence in these new release dates.  We will continue to do our part and be ready to adapt and adjust as needed.  In the interim, I want to provide an update about what we do know, with the hope that we will be able to make a definitive reopening announcement soon.

The decision about when and how to reopen our theatres is predicated on two things: first, the ability to deliver a superior moviegoing experience in a way that is safe for our team and our guests, and second, the release of new theatrical movies.  When evaluating these for our reopening, we keep the health and well-being of our guests, team members, and the communities we serve as our highest priority.  Our reopening team has been diligently working on our reopening plan utilizing resources from public health officials, medical experts, industry partners, and governmental authorities to educate ourselves on the latest science, learn best practices, and devise and implement the appropriate safety protocols that will help ensure an entertaining and safe moviegoing experience.

When we reopen, some of the new protocols you should expect to see include social distancing throughout the entire theatre environment, face coverings required for our team and our guests (except while eating/drinking in your seat), reduced and socially distant seating, additional cleaning staff, further enhanced cleaning and sanitizing procedures, safety shields, streamlining of our menu and concession offerings, and health checks for our team members.

We understand that even with all this, there may be some guests who will need a little more time to be comfortable before returning to the movies.  There will also be guests who would rather wait for our safety protocols to relax.  To these guests, we say thank you for your continued loyalty and we will have an amazing moviegoing experience waiting for you when you are ready.  As always, throughout this process we will continue to closely monitor guidance from public health authorities and adjust our protocols as appropriate.  More details about our reopening and safety protocols will be made available when we announce our reopening date.

We also want to express our appreciation to those movie studio partners who have been steadfastly working to release their blockbuster cinema-quality films in the only way they can be truly appreciated, on our giant screens.  Once we reopen, we know the movies will be amazing and remind you why you love going to the movies.  The feeling of anticipation and the smell of hot fresh popcorn (extra butter for me) as you wait for the magic to begin, cannot be replicated anywhere else.

The upcoming slate of films is sure to keep you on the edge of your seat, inspire you, make you laugh, cry, and be awed.  We are preparing for huge films like Warner Brothers’ and Christopher Nolan’s latest sci-fi blockbuster Tenet and Disney’s much awaited live-action Mulan.  We will also have some unique offerings like the 10th anniversary rerelease of Christopher Nolan’s groundbreaking Inception, as well as a selection of fun classic films.  This is expected to be followed in the ensuing weeks by A Quiet Place 2Greenland, Wonder Woman 1984Black WidowNo Time to Die (Bond 25), Disney’s SoulDuneComing 2 America, and the highly anticipated, Top Gun: Maverick.  Just to name a few!

We also recognize that we will be reopening at a historic time.  People across the country, and the world, are making their voices heard in opposition to the injustice of systemic racism.  In an effort to contribute to the conversation, when we reopen, Harkins will present special free screenings of the film Just Mercy.  This powerful film tells the true story of the founding of the Equal Justice Initiative.  We hope everyone gets an opportunity to see it.

My sincere hope is that the next time you hear from us, it will be to officially welcome you back for the Ultimate Moviegoing® experience.  To hold you over in the meantime, please visit and support our dedicated team who are out at the curbside selling Harkins award-winning popcorn and treats every weekend.  They are working hard to #KeepOnPoppin so that you can have a little Harkins movie magic for your home movie night.  If you can’t make it to the theatre, visit us at and order a Big Party Popcorn Pack for yourself or to send as a gift.

Thank you again to our loyal team and guests.  Harkins Theatres has been entertaining moviegoers for over 87 years and we have survived our share of challenges, and we will survive this current crisis as well.  Stay resolute, stay safe, and look out for one another.

It is the movie theatre that brings us all together. We are swept away in a dark auditorium with kindred strangers and magic springing from the screen. To celebrate this, we are sharing some of our favorite quotes. Please stay safe and be kind to one another. #KeepOnPoppin
