Harkins Theatres is a family-owned and operated business, founded and based in Arizona since 1933. With 34 locations in 5 states, Harkins Theatres is the 5th largest theatre chain in North America. With more than 80 years of colorful history, Harkins Theatres remains the Southwest’s premier entertainment company.
Built in 1940, the Harkins Valley Art® (originally named the College Theatre) is Arizona's oldest and longest operating movie theatre. Designed and constructed by Red Harkins at the age of 25, the Valley Art was full of fantastic new innovations like glow-in-the-dark carpeting, headphones for the hearing impaired and electronically controlled drinking fountains. It set a new standard for theatres and established a Harkins' tradition of employing the latest technology to constantly improve the movie-going experience.
In 2001 Harkins Theatres completed a $1 million renovation to the Valley Art bringing it into the 21st century with stadium seating, Ultimate Rocker® loveseats, pristine digital sound, state of the art projection equipment and remodeled snack bar - all while keeping the façade of the building intact to preserve the exterior box office, marquee and iconic neon signage. The Valley Art, which was given historical building status by the City of Tempe, is now one of the Valley's most recognized movie theatres and home to the best in foreign, art and independent film.
